Within 6 months tumors shrank by 50%, however pelvic pain continued to increase and new areas of pain began in abdominal areas outside of pelvic region. 6 month CT Scan showed no abnormality. One year post UAE, pain and fatigue became overwhelming and OB-GYN performed laparascopy finding extensive abdominal and pelvic adhesions from embolic agents. In addition, substantial endometriosis was found as well as adenomyosis of the uterus. Surgeon removed left ovary, 1 calcified cervical fibroid and excision of endometriosis. Pain continued to increase post laparascopic surgery; OB-GYN recommended 80% chance for relief from pain if supracervical hysterectomy was performed. Supracervical hysterectomy was performed one and a half months later. Pathology of both surgeries showed foreign body giant cell reaction, focal fibrosis, granulomatous inflammation and focal calcification. Surgeon's new resident physician stated there was infection in all pathology at follow-up visit. Surgeon denied this stating the resident physician was new and did not understand that there was not infection, but an adverse reaction indicated in the pathology. Pain continued to increase alarmingly post two laparascopic
surgeries. OB-GYN referred patient out of care and suggested consults with a pain
management specialist, a bowel surgeon and a therapist skilled at coping skills for pain.
Bowel surgeon had no experience with UAE complications and recommended patient to seek
intervention from a tertiary clinic such as the Mayo Clinic or the Cleveland Clinic. Began
methodone pain management and weekly therapy sessions while seeking interventional options
at the Mayo Clinic. Had to apply for disability benefits through employer, as pain and
symptom complex were so disabling that daily life had become a chore; an ordeal to get up
every day in horrible pain and fear of permanent disability. |

| I have renewed faith that I can recover
perhaps more of my health through FRS (female reconstructive surgery), as well as a sense
of not being a victim anymore through active participation in my own health care. I am
also finally on my way to standing up for myself against the members in the medical
community that contributed to my current disability and medically induced loss of health. Most importantly, I am reaching out to inform other women to beware of the "positive slant" in the marketing of UAE, and to realize that there are significant life-altering complications that can occur as a result of this procedure. It is so important to understand that there are very real complications that have occurred as a result of the UAE procedure, some of which are gangrene, pulmonary emboli, multi-organ failure, non-target embolization (causing temporary and permanent disabilities) and death. Now we must add silicone-related disease to the complication list as a byproduct of "non-target" or "misembolization" in that the embolic agents travelled outside of the targeted uterine arteries. None of these complications will be shared with the woman who is eager to avoid major surgery and thus she may fall prey to UAE's quick fix marketing mentality. In addition, I am determined to let go of fear (not an easy thing to do when you are not well) and take responsibility toward reporting my adverse health conditions. Conditions caused, and exacerbated by the medical community at large through the substandard care given to me on behalf of certain members in the medical profession. The straightforward approach as to how to do this becomes more clear with each step outlined by Dr. Hufnagel at consult, and with her continued support. Dr. Hufnagel has given me solid medical direction and emotional support where none could be found before. Dr. Hufnagel also provides a scientific perspective toward approaching not only the medical issues, but also the legal perspective and a sound framework to work within. This journey I have only just begun, and although I still have much to do, I am incredibly grateful for finding Dr. Hufnagel and other great members of the Isis group to help support me and help to guide me along the way. If there are any words of wisdom that I could convey to help other women avoid some of the health problems I've encountered, PLEASE do not hesitate to set up an educational consult with Dr. Hufnagel. She is not only a notably skilled surgeon, OB-GYN, Holistic M.D., female hormone expert and author of many books with critical issues related specifically to Women's health, Dr. Hufnagel is also a very down to earth human being who really cares about what happens to women. Sometimes it is the critical second or third opinion that impacts your health the most. Make it count. You have more options. Your reproductive organs are VERY important. Dr. Hufnagel can help you to keep them safely. She can give you good advice. Don't risk your life and well-being on an what is still an experimental UAE procedure like I did. BE informed.
